Why I Don’t Use AI

Generative AI models that write text (such as ChatGPT) or create images (such as DALL-E) are common these days, but I don’t use them. If you do, I’m happy to incorporate your materials into the work I do for you, but I recommend a judicious approach to using AI materials. I feel this way about generative AI for two reasons:

First, there are substantial questions about the legal implications of using generated materials, including about copyright infringement and ownership of the output (see this summary article from Harvard Business Review). As a result, there have been a number of lawsuits. The last thing I want is for a client to run into legal trouble because I used an AI tool that plagiarized something!

Second, I personally have concerns about their environmental impacts. It takes a lot of resources to develop and deploy a generative AI model, and each individual use of a model also takes a surprising amount of energy and water. I choose not to use them because of this.

Between those two factors, you can be certain that any work I do for you will be 100% human-generated.
